JEAN-BAPTISTE-CAMILLE COROT
Environs de Rome.

Etching and drypoint on cream laid paper, 1866. 284x210 mm; 11 1/4x8 1/4 inches, full margins. First state (of 3), before letters and any rework. Partial Aqua Fortistes watermark. A brilliant, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce, early proof.

This etching was subsequently published by Cadart and Luquet, Paris, for the Société des Aquafortistes, in 1866 and 2 additional editions by Cadart in 1872 and 1874 (see lot 221). During the Cadart publications and owing to the extensive printings for these editions, the plate was reworked and strengthened. Early impressions, such as the currect example, showing Corot's original design prior to any reworking are exceedingly scarce. We have found only one other impression in the first state at auction in the past 25 years. Delteil 6; Melot 6.
