JEAN CARLU (1900-1997) JOURNEES D'ESPERANCE. 1932.
61x45 inches. L'Office de Propagande Graphique pour la Paix, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins, some affecting text; creases and restoration in image.
Carlu worked for a lot of charities and was personally involved in the creation of L'Office de Propagande Pour La Paix (The Office of Propaganda for Peace). Formed in the 1930s, the organization strongly advocated peace throughout Europe, as the winds of war began to blow more fiercely. This is one of the more optimistic posters he designed for the group, appropriately enough as it is promoting "Days of Hope." He depicts a man's head looking up past the rainbow to what, for sure, must be clearer skies. The complex gradation of the spectrum of colors, was actually achieved by applying all the colors to the stone at one time, a necessary procedure as this project was done on a tiny budget. Carlu 32.
