JEAN CARLU (1900-1997) JOURNEES D'ESPERANCE. 1932.
61 1/2x45 1/4 inches. Editee Par l'Office de Propagande Graphique, Paris.
Condition A: minor restoration in top corners.
"L'Office de Propagande Pour la Paix" strongly advocated peace throughout Europe as the winds of war began to blow more fiercely. This is one of the more optimistic posters Carlu designed for the group, promoting "Days of Hope." As early as 1932, Carlu is already softening his geometric cubist-influenced style (earlier than A.M. Cassandre or Charles Loupot). The image is a pure, inspired, sophisticated rendition of a man's head looking up past the rainbow to what surely must be clearer skies. The complex gradation of the colors was achieved by applying all the colors to the stone at one time rather than printing them separately, a necessary procedure as, like the previous lot, this project was done on a tiny budget. The poster is very rare in this larger format. Carlu 32.
