JEAN CARLU (1900-1997) PÉPA BONAFÉ. 1928. PICKED UP BY OWNER'S SON 9/4/07
22 1/4x14 7/8 inches. Marcel Picard, Paris.
Condition B-: minor restoration along sharp vertical and horiztonal folds.
Carlu's strong Cubist influence is on full display in his use of color and design for this virtually unknown comedienne. Using the image of the two theatre masks (comedy and tragedy) and the performer's profile, it is one of Carlu's most charming and enduring posters from this period as well as the only one to feature a woman. This small format, in which the poster most often appears, was actually a color plate from issue 8 of Arts et Metiers Graphiques. Carlu 14.
