JEAN CARLU (1900-1997) PRODUCTION. 1942.
29 3/4x40 1/4 inches. U. S. Government Printing Office.
Condition B+: sharp vertical and horizontal folds.
Designed and issued in 1941, six months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Government re-issued this poster on a larger scale a year later when the war machine was heavily reliant on the mighty output from American factories. When Alain Weill interviewed him in 1980, Carlu clearly remembered how he got the poster commission, beating out five American artists who had been chosen to submit entries. Here, power, technology and strength are combined in a modern, almost mechanical style. This is certainly one of the most spectacular American posters produced during World War II.
