JEAN CHARLOT
Portrait of a Man.

Pencil on cream wove paper, 1956. 355x215 mm; 14x8 1/2 inches. Dedicated "for Chris Buchheit, His friend J. Charlot" in pencil, lower right, recto. Ex-collection Christian Buchheit, New York.

Christian Buchheit (1885-1974) worked for the Art Students League of New York as its Building Superintendent, from 1905 until his retirement in December, 1971. In honor of his 51 years with the League, many of the "League" artists and teachers, including Geroge Tooker, George Grosz, John Sloan, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Will Barnet and others paid tribute to Chris with a 50th year anniversary party, presenting him with a portfolio of watercolors, drawings and prints, including the current pencil drawing by Charlot.
