For half a century the brilliant and charming Jean Cocteau was one of the pillars of the Parisian artistic scene. He was an artist, painter, writer and movie director. Wizard of the Boeuf sur le Toit and friend of the cubists and surrealists, he was everywhere that something artistically new and important was taking place. His films (La Belle et La Bette, Orphee, L'Aigle a deux tetes) are highly poetical aesthetic wonders, with fantastic costumes and sets, all of which he designed. As an artist and a director he was president of the jury at the Festival du Film Maudit (The Accursed Film Festival), and was happy to also design their poster. The excellent design is a black ink spot upon which Cocteau has delineated one of his characteristic profiles. L'Affiche du Cinema p. 108, no. 185.
