JEAN DON (1900-1985) BAL PETITS LITS BLANCS. 1925. 61 1/2x46 inches, 156x116 1/2 cm. Condition A-: minor loss along lower right edge; minor tears and wrinkles at edges. Paper. Don arrived in Paris from Bucharest during World War I. Before long, through a fortuitous connection with François André, he had become acquainted with "tout Paris." Andre, who owned Casinos in Deauville, Cannes, and La Baule, singled Don out as his favorite designer and decorator. He had him design posters and decorate balls and gala events for his rich clients. The Bal des Petits Lits Blancs was one of Paris' major charity balls held each year to benefit children's hospitals. Year after year, the event was heralded by posters designed by the most fashionable illustrators in Paris, including Jean-Gabriel Domergue, Georges Barbier and George Lepape. This poster, exuding the elegance and status of those attending the event, may be the rarest of all. It hasn't appeared at auction in America for over 20 years.
