Don arrived in Paris from Bucharest during World War I. Before long, through a fortuitous connection with Francois Andre, he had completely acquainted himself with "tout Paris." Andre, who owned Casinos in Deauville, Cannes, and La Baule, singled Don out as his favorite designer and decorator. He had him design posters and decorate balls and gala events for his rich clients. Don also worked for show business clients, with whom he became associated through his wife, the famous French actress Berthe Bovy. Maurice Chevalier was the most famous performer to ever commission a poster from Don, and this is one of the rarest Maurice Chevalier posters. In the mid 1920s Chevalier was a superstar performer on both sides of the Atlantic. With his trademark boater hat, and his large lips, Chevalier was an easy subject for caricaturists and poster artists. Don manages to perfectly exaggerate this unique profile.
