JEAN DROIT (1884-1961) AN EAST COAST TONIC. Circa 1930.
39 3/4x49 3/4 inches, 101x126 1/2 cm. Jarrold & Sons, London.
Condition A- / B+: vertical and horizontal folds; staining along top edge; minor creasing and abrasions in image.
Droit was a painter and illustrator who designed several posters for France during the First World War and several travel posters in the years between the wars. He is best known for his poster designed for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. He designed two posters for Britain's LNER, each with wonderfully gleeful, healthy, long-limbed, graceful and rosy cheeked vacationers. The similarity in style between these two posters (the other, The Belgian Coast) suggest they were both designed around the same time, which is how we are able to date this image. We haven't found another copy at auction since 1988. RARE. Voyage p. 90.
