With his Récits series (1974-1975), Dubuffet presents simplified vignettes of daily life, amidst frenzied lines and colors. The result is captivating and meant to transport the viewer to a carefree realm of freedom where the familiar is suspended. Dubuffet (1901-1985) explored these ideas in his earlier works, though revisited the concept in early September 1974. In a whirlwind of output between September and October, Dubuffet completed 150 works on paper by first drawing loose organic lines with black felt-tip pen, then cutting, reassembling, and gluing them to form complete compositions. The current drawing, the 105th of the Récit series, was created on September 9, 1974.
