Lithograph printed in black on cream wove Arches, circa 1945. 380x345 mm; 15x13 1/2 inches (sheet), full margins. Signed and inscribed "épreuve d'éssai" in pencil, lower margin. A superb impression of this extremely scarce, unrecorded lithograph.
The current work closely resembles other subjects from the Matière et Memoire series of lithographs, 1944 (Webel 13-46), notably in the focus on the single, standing figure on a shaded background set against the stark background of the paper. In all likelihood, this was a lithograph conceived for this series but never included. Not in Webel.
