Throughout the civil unrest and widespread strikes that occurred in France in May, 1968, the state-controlled television, O.R.T.F. (Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française) censored stories about the insurrection, which were not allowed to be broadcast. As the other unions moved to strike, so too did the employees of the O.R.T.F. Effel's poster shows the censor's "white rectangle" over the mouth of Marianne with the slogan, "No white rectangles for an adult population! Independence and autonomy for the O.R.T.F."
