JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET
Les Glaneuses.

Etching printed in dark brownish black on cream laid Japan paper, 1855-56. 190x254 mm; 7 1/2x10 inches, full margins. Third state (of 3). A very good, well-inked impression of this important etching with strong contrasts.

Millet (1814-1875) based this etching on his now famous same titled oil painting. When it was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1857, it was not perceived well because of its large size (33 inches by 44 inches), which was a scale usually at this time reserved for religious, historical and mythological paintings, and because it depicted everyday labor, illustrating a realistic view of poverty and the working class. Delteil 12; Melot 12.
