JEAN-FRANÇOIS RAFFAËLLI
La Neige.

Color etching, drypoint and aquatint on cream wove paper, 1906. 450x567 mm; 17 3/4x22 1/2 inches, full margins. Fifth state (of 5). Edition of 200. Signed and inscribed "No. 108" in pencil, lower margin. A superb, richly-inked impression of this large print.

Raffaëlli (1850-1924) was a Parisian-born painter and printmaker who, on Degas's insistence, also exhibited with the Impressionists in 1880 and 1881 (a move which caused a rift in the original core group of Impressionist artists; Monet in particular felt that the inclusion of Raffaëlli and other artists diluted their impact). Raffaëlli was represented by the gallerist Theo van Gogh; his now famous brother the artist Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) collected Raffaëlli's work (an impression of this subject was found in van Gogh's estate). Raffaëlli concentrated on color printmaking during the last three decades of his career and revolutionized the process. Delteil 68.
