JEAN HÉLION
Abstract Figure.

Brush and ink and wash and watercolor, 1937. 262x234 mm; 10 3/8x9 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in ink, upper right. With an abstract figure study in crayon, verso.

Jean Hélion's abstract work of the 1930s established him among the world's great Modernists. First adopting the rectilinear style of Mondrian, Hélion's work later evolved to include curved lines and objects of solid and volumetric quality. In 1939, Hélion's work experienced an abrupt change in style. In a state of complete apostasy, Helion painted his first figurative canvas. He never explrored abstraction again, the style which he had once described as "the idiom of clarity."
