JEAN-HONORÉ FRAGONARD
L'Armoire.

Etching, 1778. 347x468 mm; 133/4x181/2 inches. Second state (of 4). Trimmed inside the plate mark, with thread margins outside the fine black border line. A brilliant, well-inked impression with strong contrasts and with all the delicate lines, including the very fine lines on the white door frame directly above the woman's head and on the cape over the left arm of the man in the closet, printing clearly.

According to Carlson, Fragonard's "largest and most complex etching" (Carlson/Ittmann, Regency to Empire, French Printmaking 1715-1814, 1984, p. 227). Wildenstein 23.
