JEAN-HONORÉ FRAGONARD
L'Armoire.

Etching, 1778. 395x495 mm; 15 1/2x19 1/2 inches. Second state (of 4), before the address of Naudet. Trimmed inside the plate mark, but with ample margins outside the border line. A brilliant, well-inked impression with strong contrasts and with all the delicate lines, including the very fine lines on the white door frame directly above the woman's head and on the cape over the left arm of the man in the closet, printing clearly.

According to Carlson, Fragonard's "largest and most complex etching" (Carlson/Ittmann, Regency to Empire, French Printmaking 1715-1814, Minneapolis, 1984, p. 227). Wildenstein 23.
