JEAN JOUTY (DATES UNKNOWN) AMUSEMENTS. Gouache maquette. 1940.
42 1/2x29 1/2 inches, 108x75 cm.
Condition B+: restoration and restored pin-holes at edges; abrasions in image.
An unrealized project for a poster promoting a joyful evening of jazz, comedy, drama and other musical performances. Jouty, an otherwise unknown artist, designed this poster, in which a musical note, a singer's mouth and a large ace of hearts all take similar shape. As these were the early years of World War II, a grim time for Europe, it is uncertain whether such an optimistic image was created for an event that ultimately was canceled, or was in and of itself a flight of escapist fantasy.
