Additional Details

Occasionally Jean-Léon Gérôme was inspired by and depicted seventeenth century French historical subjects in his art. His masterpiece for which the present drawing is a study, Promenade de la Cour dans les jardins de Versailles, or Louis XIV and His Court in the Park of Versailles in the collection of the Dixon Gallery & Gardens, Memphis, Tennessee, came from Gérôme's experience of watching the sun set at Versailles. The painting he conceived is widely acknowledged as the artist's last great painting, and he executed several studies and preparatory drawings for it.
