JEAN-LOUIS FORAIN (1852-1931) DEUXIEME SALON DU CYCLE. 1894.
82 1/2x35 5/8 inches. H. Harold, Paris.
Condition A-: overpainting in right image; creases in margins; vertical and horizontal folds. Two sheets. Framed.
Jean Louis Forain was a friend of both Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas (whose technique inspired him). He was an Impressionist painter and watercolorist, but also a passionate illustrator. He was also influenced by Honoré Daumier, whose satirical style can be seen in Forain's humorous caricatures. His illustrations, mainly dealing with Parisian life, and specifically women, appeared in many different magazines. This is one of three known posters he designed. The others pale in comparison to the delicate grace and simple beauty of this image. His excellent talents as a draughtsman are fully on display. The image was so popular that it was printed in three sizes, this being the largest format. DFP-II 362, Maindron p. 64, Maitres 51, Bicycle Posters 20, Abdy p.106.
