Photographer Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe was born in Chicago, Illinois. She began her formal training at age eight when her parents enrolled her in classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1975, she received a BFA degree in photography from The Cooper Union School of Art. Moutoussamy-Ashe married tennis legend Arthur Ashe in 1977. Since his death, in 1993, she has been a stalwart activist in the AIDS crisis through programs such as the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS and her 1994 book of photographs Daddy and Me, describing the relationship of her daughter and her husband, as he was dying of AIDS. Throughout her career, Moutoussamy-Ashe has exhibited her work widely, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art among others.
