Donaldson became a key member of the Organization for Black American Culture, and helped organize the 1967 Wall of Respect mural. Donaldson was a founding member of AfriCOBRA in 1968, writing their 1970 manifesto Ten in Search of a Nation and helping define its aesthetic through his paintings and prints.
