JEFFERSON, THOMAS. Autograph Letter Signed, "Th:Jefferson," as Governor of Virginia, to Brigadier General George Weedon, describing and listing the new militia called out by county. 1 page, 8vo, with integral address leaf. Richmond [VA], 13 March 1781

Additional Details

Jefferson describes the newly active militia by county: "We apprehended Culpeper was too distant and it appeared too detached from the other counties we were to call on, as we must have passed over some uncalled to get at that. . . . Below is a state of the several counties and the numbers called for. These are exclusive of what are in camp with Genl. Muhlenberg." Appended in the lower margin is a list of 18 Virginia counties with their militia allotments, summed up as "originally called in" or "supplementary." Published in Papers of Thomas Jefferson, 5:141.
