Founded by the important cellist and performance artist Charlotte Moorman in 1963, the Annual Avant Garde Festival began as a gathering for experimental musicians, in conjunction with the scene emerging out of Fluxus. By 1971, the festival boasted performances by artists of many mediums, but retained its focus on music. The Annual Avant Garde Festival operated until 1982.
