J.L. CARSTAIRS (DATES UNKNOWN)

PETERHEAD / TWO 18 - HOLE GOLF COURSES. Circa 1925.

40x25 inches, 101½x63½ cm. Ben Johnson & Co., Ltd., York.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges; linen wrapped and stapled to stretchers, poster wraps at edges. Framed.

A cartoonist for Punch magazine and a graphic designer with three travel posters to his credit, Carstairs also designed book jacket covers. His style here represents a cross between the work of Henry Gawthorne and the Beggarstaff Brothers, with distinct figures rendered without outline. Founded in 1841, the golf course at Peterhead, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is said to be the 18th oldest in the world. It's original course was extended to 18 holes in 1908 and a second 18-hole course was added in 1923. Rare.
