According to a note in the 1985 exhbition catalogue, Anne Lowenthal suggested in a letter dated October 1, 1984, that this is one of a group of drawings assigned to an artist she called the Pseudo-Utewael who is possibly identical with Gerrit Pietersz. Eliane de Wilde has noted a similarity to the work of Frans Francken II (1581-1642).
