JOAN MIRÓ (AFTER)
Le Moulin à Café.

Color etching, aquatint and roulette, 1954. 487x562 mm; 19 1/4x22 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 169/300 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Georges Visat, Paris. Published by Maeght, Paris. A very good, richly-inked impression with strong colors.

This color etching is based on Miró's (1893-1983) same-titled oil on canvas from 1918. Born into a family of a goldsmith and a watchmaker, Miró grew up in the Barri Gòtic neighborhood of Barcelona and initially studied business, working as a clerk during his late teens. He abandoned the business world for art after suffering a nervous breakdown and enrolled at the fine art academy at La Llotja in 1907. Inspired by Fauve and Cubist exhibitions in Barcelona and abroad, he had his first solo exhibition in Barcelona in 1918 (which included this work) and was drawn ultimately--like his contemporary and fellow-Spanish artist Pablo Picasso--to the avant-garde art community around Montparnasse, and in 1920, moved to Paris. Maeght 1701.
