JOAN MIRÓ
Untitled (Figures).

Color crayons on paper, 1959. 440x360 mm; 17 1/4x14 1/8 inches. Signed, dated, and dedicated to Ward Bennett in pencil, lower margin. Gift from the artist to Ward Bennett, thence by inheritance to the current owner.

Ward Bennett (1917-2003) was among the foremost American designers of the second half of the 20th century, whose robust career included design for furniture, interiors, houses, jewelry, fashion and more. In 1937, he spent a year studying in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, with the sculptor Constantin Brancusi; he later shared a studio with Louise Nevelson on East 69th Street in New York.

Bennett and Miró became friends in New York during the 1960s and remained close until Miró's death in 1983.
