JODE, GERARD de. Universi Orbis Seu Terreni Globi In Plano Effigies. Exceptionally scarce double-page cordiform world map. 401x533 mm, top and bottom margins wide, ample at sides, Latin text on verso; very fine original hand-color in full; wormtracks at central vertical fold in top and bottom margin, two repaired tracks on right and left of bottom margin, only two minuscule holes in image, scattered soiling, left and right edges reinforced on verso. Pencil note in lower left margin: "From the atlas by [Daniel] Cellarius / Antwerp 1578". One of the most desirable examples to come to market in decades. [Antwerp, 1578]

Additional Details

The only obtainable world map by Gerard de Jode--accorded an "R" rarity class by Shirley (124). The geography is primarily derived from Ortelius' completely unobtainable 1564 eight-sheet world map. This map was not republished in 1593 by Cornelis. The states of this map are somewhat undetermined, but the present example comes after the first state but before the addition of "Mare del Sud" and "Oceanus Meridionalis".
