JOHANN FRIEDRICH BOLT
An Elderly Man, Dressed in a Coat and Tricorn<>.

Brush and pen and gray ink over black chalk on cream laid paper. 117x62 mm; 4 5/8x2 1/2 inches (irregular oval). Inscribed "Ferd (sic !) Bolt" in ink, verso on the mount, and "F. Bolt" and "Fr. Bolt" in ink, verso of the drawing. Ex-collection unknown collector, red ink stamp with the letter G in a square verso on the mount (not in Lugt).

A contemporary of Nikolas Chodowiecki, Bolt (1769-1836) was a printmaker and portraitist in Berlin. Thieme-Becker point out that his drawings executed in the stippled manner, like the current work, are artistically his most attractive.
