JOHANN RUDOLF FOLLENWEIDER
Engagement Portrait of Luc Schönauer and Miss Carolina Sophia Augusta Fries from

Brush and ink and gray wash over pencil and black chalk on cream wove paper, 1832. 210x270 mm; 8 3/8x10 5/8 inches. Signed and dated "R. Follenweider nach E. F. - merz 1832" in ink, lower right recto Annotated in ink, lower center recto.

Dr. Sigrid Wechssler has pointed out that the current drawing by the Swiss artist Follenweider (1774-1847), made as a memento by him in 1832, is most likely a copy after either a lost drawing or painting by Ernst Fries (1801-1833), one of the foremost German landscape artists. His sister--Mlle Fries--married Luc Schönauer in 1827. The marriage ended soon after with her husband's untimely death around 1830 and she remarried in 1831. Ernst Fries had returned in the summer of 1827 to Heidelberg and his record could therefore date shortly before his sister's first marriage.
