Von Stein was a painter and poster designer who brought his own personal elegance to his works. Although his compositions are very strict, and here, monumental, they also contain a very appealing Art Deco touch. For this ocean liner, the artist's "cinematic Art Deco design places a frame around the Rotterdam Lloyd Steamship Balderan - a device that, with its series of towering vertical elements, cleverly and deftly pulls the viewer's gaze directly toward the ship. The eye glides from the airbrushed columns in the right-hand foreground directly to the silhouetted palm tree and onward to the Balderan's foremast, each component precisely proportioned to suit the slick diminishing perspective" (Crouse p. 231). One of several text variants, this is the Dutch version.
