JOHANNES EHLERS (1892-1945) INTERNATIONALE PHOTOGRAPHISCHE AUSSTELLUNG. 1911.
23 1/4x16 7/8 inches. Sulter, Hamburg.
Condition B+: minor tears in margins; pinholes in top corners; pencil in bottom margin; creases in margins and image.
A self-taught graphic designer, Ehlers designed very few posters. Here for an early exhibition of the Hamburg Amateur Photography Society, he conceptualizes a German academic vision that foreshadows the psychedelic movement by five decades! The improbable image of a man, on his knees as if in prayer, greeting the sunrise (which can also be seen as the lens of a camera or as the birth of a whole new art form). Saturated in reds and yellow, this and has the feel of a San Francisco Rock poster from the 1960s. DFP-III 699.
