Atherton was a graphic designer and a surrealist painter. While he designed numerous covers for The Saturday Evening Post, Fortune and Holidaymagazines, his output of posters was rather small; he is best remembered for this poster he designed for the New York World's Fair. He also designed at least two World War II posters.
