JOHN COLLINS (1814-1902)

NEW YORK . . . ALWAYS EXCITING! / GO BY PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD. Gouache maquette. Circa 1940s.

42 1/2x27 1/4 inches, 108x69 1/4 cm.
Condition A / A-: minor abrasions in image; pencil notation and small tape pieces in outer margins; pin holes in margins; painted on artist board. Framed.

The original maquette for a poster that was issued by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The painted artist board is stamped on the verso by Al Paul Lefton Company, an advertising agency founded in 1926. This view of the lower Manhattan skyline and piers from under the Brooklyn Bridge appears to match the landscape from the 1940s. For the poster, See Swann sale 1906, Lot 286.
