JOHN FALTER (1910-1982)

"Slobsmanship."

Preliminary sketches for cover of The Saturday Evening Post, published July 1, 1961. One color study in watercolor and pen on board. 337x270 mm; 13 1/4x10 3/4 inches. Initialed "JF" in lower left image. Four pencil rough detail sketches on same board size; two smaller studies on board of the fastidious neighbor ("The Neaty" as Falter captions him), and 16 working photographs of model Tom Hunter as said "Neaty" in various amusing poses with hedge clippers. Envelope from photography studio to Falter.
Falter was a prolific illustrator and is best known for his more than 120 covers produced for The Saturday Evening Post. He received commissions for other leading publications of the day, including Esquire, McCall's, Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, Life, and Look. This lot, with its sketches in varying stages of detail, give insight into Falter's working process as he developed compositions over time.
