Additional Details

John Graham's paintings on glass are extremely rare; only one other such work has been found at auction in the past 20 years. Both glass paintings, the present work and Still Life (1927), were painted at a turning point in Graham's personal and professional life. In 1927, Graham was granted United States citizenship, and his Blue Bay (1927) was purchased by Duncan Phillips (The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.). Perhaps this newfound security and critical praise gave the artist the freedom to experiment with new media.
