JOHN H. TWACHTMAN
Holland Dykes.

Etching with pencil additions on Japan paper, circa 1885-88. 265x379 mm; 10 1/2x15 inches, full margins. Artist's proof, aside from edition of approximately only 15. Published by Klackner, New York. A very good, richly-inked impression.

This etching was among the artist's proofs on Japan paper that appeared in publisher Christian Klackner's 1888 sales catalogue (see Baskett, pp. 92-93). Few impressions were ever published, mostly beacuse of the cost due to the large plate size and composition that are reminiscent of Twatchman's oil paintings. The etched borderline, well within the platemark, and additions of pencil in the grass, sea and sky attest to his working of the plate and etching as a painter-printmaker. Baskett 16.
