JOHN HEARTFIELD (1891-1968) FORDERT: VERBOT DER ATOMWAFFEN! 1955.
32 1/2x23 inches, 82 1/2x58 1/2 cm. Herausgegeben vom Deutschen Friedenstrat, Berlin.
Condition B+: minor tears at edges; tape on verso along repaired tear in image; creases in image; horizontal fold. Paper.
Heartfield came of age as a political photomontagist in Berlin in the 1920s designing book covers and anti-Fascist photomontages for AIZ (Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung). During World War II he fled Germany to Czechoslovakia and then England. In 1950, he returned to what was then East Germany, where he turned his talents primarily toward designing posters for theatrical productions. Here, the evil snake of nuclear war (his tongue a dollar sign, symbol of the capitalist nations and their pursuit of power), is being pulled away by a powerful arm. It is a powerful call opposing atomic weapons. Militant 87.
