JOHN HEARTFIELD (1891-1968) GENESUNG. Circa 1956. 321/2x223/4 inches. Condition A-: repaired tears in margins; overpainting along vertical and horizontal folds. After his return to East Germany in 1950 Heartfield did most of his work for theatrical companies, producing posters advertising various plays. Very little is recorded about work that he did, as in this instance, for movies. As with most of his later photomontage work the subject is no longer politcial, however his mastery of the medium remains in place as evidenced by the two levels of color and the intense, halo-like effect of the light on the woman's hair.
