JOHN HELD, JR. HAVE A REAL VACATION! / ROMP IN RHODE ISLAND. Circa 1925.
40x271/4 inches.
Condition B+: restoration in margins and corners; bottom margin, with border, expertly recreated.
By all appearances this is a poster map designed by the great early 20th century American cartoonist John Held, Jr., a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, Redbook and other popular magazines. That the bottom margin has been replaced suggests that there would have been a signature there. Held had a penchant for humorous maps and designed more than his fair share, The Most of John Held Jr (The Stephen Greene Press, Vermont 1972) illustrates 9 such maps, each with an identical black and white alternating border and a colorful and elaborate compass rose. Held also designed posters for the New Haven Railway, whose tracks are delineated in this image.
