Koch (1909-1978) and his wife, Dora Zaslavsky, a noted musician, bought a large apartment in the majestic El Dorado building on Central Park West, New York, where his painting of society portraits helped to maintain their living. He was a masterful interpreter and chronicler of mid-century, high-society life in New York, both in his portraits and cocktail party scenes; his style eschewed the more popular abstract art of the time and instead evinced his traditional training in Paris during the early 1930s.
