Watercolor and pencil on paper, 1874. 160x75 mm; 6 1/4x3 inches. With the artist's red ink stamp (Lugt 2976a, lower left recto; according to Lugt, La Farge's ink stamp was designed when he was in Japan in 1886, it represents his name in Japanese characters, and was used by both the artist and later by his descendants on works created by La Farge), and inscribed and dated on an accompanying mat.

This work is likely one of the earliest studies by La Farge (1835-1910) for a stained glass window design (he designed more than a hundred stained glass windows during the course of his career and was awarded patents in 1880 and 1884 for new stained glass methods). He was commissioned to design a stained glass window depicting the Elizabethan poet Philip Sidney for Memorial Hall at Harvard University, but it was never realized as its construction was deemed too costly.
