A similar watercolor, drawn by Marin in 1927, is reproduced on the cover of Phillips, John Marin Memorial Exhibition Art Catalog, 1955. He returned to this theme, of a two-masted ship at sea, likely inspired by views from around his summer home at Addison, Maine, frequently from the 1920s until the end of his career. The colorful, abstract, circular shapes of the moon and sun in the current work are repeated motifs in Marin's watercolors too; these recall the work of his contemporaries Georgia O'Keeffe and Arthur Dove as well. Perhaps his most abstract expression of this motif is in the 1938 watercolor, Late Afternoon Sun, Cape Split Maine.
Marin also created an etching of a similar sailboat, published by Alfred Stieglitz, in 1932 (see Zigrosser 155). Coincindentally, he signed and dedicated one of the proofs of this etching to his friend O'Keeffe.
