JOHN MARIN
Venetian Palaces and Canal.

Color pastels on light tan wove paper, circa 1907. 295x215 mm; 11 3/4x8 3/8 inches. Signed in black crayon, lower right recto. Ex-collection M. Knoedler & Co., Inc., New York, with their label and the original receipt of purchase from the current owner; private collection, New York.

Marin (1870-1953) arrived in Venice in April 1907 for a six week stay with his family. During this time he made some 20 etchings and a handful of drawings of Venetian palaces and canals. While departing from the style of Whistler's famous Venetian etchings and pastels from the late 1870s and 1880s, Marin's work nevertheless owes something to Whistler--both the vantage points he adopted and the shimmering quality of his Venetian prints and drawings. In this drawing Marin also imitates Whistler's passion for applying heavy pastel colors on tan paper.
