JOHN MARTIN
The Fall of Ninevah.

Mezzotint, 1829-30. 673x912 mm; 261/2x36 inches, small margins. Scattered short edge tears, well outside the image, backed with wove paper.

A very good, dark impression of this tour-de-force.

The apocalyptic vision represented by the English printmaker Martin (1789-1854) in the current work reveals the influence of Rembrandt in the virtuoso handling of chiaroscuro. Though working in a different technique, and one that was not yet in use during Rembrandt's career, the effect of this monumental work echoes Rembrandt's "Christ Healing the Sick (The Hundred Guilder Print)". Campbell/Wees 82.
