JOHN OUTTERBRIDGE (1933 - )
Barker.

Mixed media assemblage, including found wood, nails and metal, 1967. 1181x305x178 mm; 46x12 1/2x7 inches. Incised signature, twice, and date on the verso. With a worn typed label on the verso, supplying the title.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, Los Angeles (circa 1978); private collection, Rochester, New York.

This large figure is a significant and early work by this pioneering assemblage artist. Here the artist incorporates found wood and metal into a figure holding a key that appears inspired by both African and medieval imagery. Outterbridge first exhibited with the Brockman Gallery at this time. Similar found-wood figures, Guilding Light, 1966, and The Sermon, circa 1968 are illustrated in L. A. Object & David Hammons Body Prints. Tilton/Charwood pp. 172-73.
