John Sex was both a performer and an artist and a seminal figure in the downtown New York scene of the 1980s. This show, the first at Club 57 , featured the works of 66 different artists including Keith Haring (who was the curator), David Wojnarowicz, Donald Baechler, Frank Moore, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Club 57 was the legendary East Village performance space, exhibition hall and night club located on St. Marks Place (number 57) which operated for a a few years towards the end of the 1970s and into the early 1980s. An exciting hotbed of artistic and musical creativity, a list of the club's regular habitues reads like a who's who of the downscene in New York, many of whom went on to become famous fixtures in their respective mediums.
