JOHN SLOAN
Mosaic.

Etching and aquatint, 1917. 203x253 mm; 8x10 inches, full margins. Edition of 35 (from an intended edition of 100). Signed and inscribed "100 proofs" in pencil, lower margin. A superb, richly-inked impression of this very scarce print.

We have found only 2 other impressions at auction in the past 25 years.

According to Sloan, "The plate is a satire on abstract art, and implies that followers of the trend are obeying the Mosaic Law." On a proof impression of this subject now in the Metrolpolitan Museum of Art, New York, Sloan made an inscription--portions of which he also engraved in the plate--which reads: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of anything in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth." Morse 185.
